FAQ Insurance - questions and answers related to insurance in Euro<26

I have got a card issued before 1st May 2006 – is my insurance valid in the USA and Canada?

Yes, it is. If you have your card issued not later than 30 April 2006, your insurance is valid in the USA and Canada throughout the whole validity period of your card.

When does the insurance start to be valid?
Insurance in the card issued today starts to be valid on the following day. This means that if you buy a card at 11 a.m., it is valid at midnight (so you have to wait until that time).

Exceptions:

  • if you go abroad straight after buying your card, it is valid once you have crossed the border (also after take-off while going abroad by plane - for international flights);
  • if you are abroad when the card is issued, the policy will be valid 7 days after your Euro<26 card has been issued;
  • a card ordered via the Internet - its validity starts with the moment we have entered your payment in our account (cards are sent by a registered priority letter the day after your payment has entered our bank account).

Is the insurance included in Euro<26 a good and sufficient insurance?
Our advantage lies in insurer’s friendly attitude (Signal Iduna) and a great number of Euro<26 cardholders in Poland. Owing to these things the policy included in the card is really advantageous. Having insurance is like having pocket money - you never have the sufficient amount of it. We are not telling you then that Euro<26 policies will do in all situations. Just to compare: policies for 250.000 zl offered in Euro<26 are available with other insurers as a ‘Gold’, ‘Platinum’ or ‘VIP’ options – which means they are very expensive. You are unlikely to find such insurance for 60-80 zl with any insurance agent. Anyway, you can check it yourself – visit any insurance company. What is more, it sometimes happens that insurance agents themselves call us and ask how it is possible that we have SUCH INSURANCE?

Who is the insurer?
As provided for in the General Agreement No M1159 Signal Iduna Poland Insurance Joint Stock Company (www.signal-iduna.pl) insures the holders of the Polish edition Euro<26 cards which have been issued since 1st April 2004.

What is the emergency phone number?
We are at your service on our emergency line round the clock (+ 48 22) 864 55 26

Where can I find detailed information on insurance?
It is available in a booklet with insurance conditions (it should be attached to each card that has been issued) and on our website in the insurance entry. If your question is really difficult or specific please contact Signal Iduna S.A. directly www.signal-iduna.pl, at 022 50 56 160 (or at general number 022 50 56 100), fax. 022 50 56 161

Can I receive free medical treatment in the EU countries after Poland’s accession to the European Union?
Since 1st May 2004 we are entitled to use health service in the EU countries. Unfortunately, in majority of cases it is not free of charge. The purchase of an additional policy seems to be the easiest solution then. You will find more information on our website in ‘Insurance in the EU’ entry.

In which countries is my insurance valid?
WORLD and SPORT policies comprise the whole world with the exception of the USA and Canada. In the case of Poland policy, the insurance validity is restricted only to the territory of our country.

Am I also insured at school when I have a Euro<26 card?
Yes, you are. The insurance included in the card is as good as or often much better than the one offered to you at school or at university. You will find more information on this topic on our website in the ‘Insurance’ entry.

Do I need a card with a SPORT policy when I go skiing or snowboarding?
If you go on holiday as a tourist or as a form of recreation you do not need to have a SPORT policy. This version is required if you take part in competitions or you go on a sport summer or winter camp, do any competitive or extreme sports.

Can I count on medical transport if I have an accident on the piste?
Yes, you can. The insurance shall be valid if an accident occurs on the piste (it is important that it is not off piste!) and there is a necessity for being transported to the doctor. The transport may have various forms – from a toboggan to a helicopter.

Are skis and snowboards regarded as ‘snow or ice vehicles’?
No, they aren’t. Some people have doubts while reading the insurance conditions. There is no need for you to worry – skis and snowboards do not fit into the category of ‘snow vehicles’. (§2 item 14), which means that they are covered by NNW (accident insurance) and KL (medical payment insurance).

What is NNW?
NNW is an abbreviation that stands for ‘consequences of accidents’. To put it simply, it is damages that you can apply for after having an accident and finishing your medical treatment. All three policies (WORLD, SPORT i POLAND) available with Euro<26 cards have got accident insurance NNW.

Which insurance policies are available with Euro<26 card?
You have a choice of three policies: WORLD policy, SPORT policy and POLAND policy. For details please consult our website, Insurance entry.

What is KL?
KL is an abbreviation that stands for expenses related to medical payment. It is included in WORLD and SPORT policy. It provides a cover for medical treatment expenses incurred abroad. As health services abroad (in particular hospital treatment) are usually very expensive (an ultrasound or an X-ray may even cost 1000 Euro, and ambulance transport even up to 3000 Euro), it is indispensable to have an insurance including KL. In Euro<26 the medical treatment expenses incurred abroad are reimbursed up to 60,000 Euro! Owing to this you do not have to worry about huge bills for medical treatment. Remember to follow the instructions described in insurance conditions. You will find more information on our website in the ‘insurance’ entry.

Are the expenses incurred abroad for medicine covered from KL?
Yes, they are. If a doctor abroad prescribes you some medicine, you are entitled to reimbursement of the expenses after submitting the bills.

What happens if I have no insurance and fall ill or have an accident abroad?
In ‘civilized’ countries doctors will stop treating you when your life is not in danger any more and make out a bill for their services. In the EU reimbursement t of debts for unsettled medical bills is rather effective and amounts to unusually high sums of money. In countries ‘civilised differently’ – well we had better touch wood.

Does the insurance include KL (medical payment insurance) in Poland?
In Poland – there is no problem e.g. with hospital treatment – we are all insured by the National Health Fund, so we do not need any additional policy. In Poland only NNW (accident insurance) is valid as it is not covered by the National Health Fund (NFZ.)

Does the insurance cover a leg fracture?
Yes, it does. Euro<26 card comprises accident insurance (NNW). The insurance company will pay damages in case of:

  • permanent health damage – up to 20,000 zl
  • death resulting from an accident – 15,000 zl
  • daily allowance for hospital stay (in Poland) - 40 zl/day (from 10 to 60 days).

What shall I do in case of an emergency?
You will find detailed instructions on our website in insurance entry or in a booklet with insurance conditions.

How much time do I have to report damage?

In the case of NNW (accident insurance) the damage should be reported after treatment and rehabilitation period but not later than 2 years after the accident. In the case of KL (medical payment insurance) when hospitalization or transport to Poland is required – call Emergency Central Office immediately. In other cases you have 7 days from your return to the country.

Who is to pay at the hospital – a cardholder or the insurer?
Payment amounting to 400 zl should be settled in cash. The reimbursement of the expenses takes place when you come back to your country. Should the amount be higher, you can notify the Insurer (Emergency Central Office tel. (+ 48 22) 864 55 26) or pay for it yourself and get the refund in Poland. Remember to get medical diagnosis from your doctor and original of the bill. If you pay medical expenses yourself, you should keep the original proof of payment (e.g. a cashier’s receipt, stamp on the bill). If other expenses related to suddenly falling ill or accidents have been met, you should provide any documents proving these costs.

What does the own share mean? If I fall ill abroad and pay for medical appointment and prescriptions 200 zl, will the insurer return the amount of 200 zl or 50 zl to me?
The own share is an amount up to which the insurer bears no responsibility. In the case of Euro<26 this sum amounts to 150 zl. Should medical expenses exceed this amount (e.g. 151zl), then the insurer shall bear the whole sum.

Where is the medical board meeting held?
The insurer makes efforts so that the meeting of Medical Board was held without bothering the person injured to attend it and sees to it that all formalities are settled by post on the basis of the medical documents that have been collected. As a last resort is the personal consultancy with a doctor organised as close as possibly to where a cardholder lives. The insurer has a right to verify the medical statement submitted by the holder against the one made by his own doctor.

Summer training periods – is my policy valid?

Yes, as long as training periods are legal (you have to possess all permissions, agreements, visas etc. required by law). The policy (excluding POLAND policy) will be valid if you take up a legal job or study abroad as well as while travelling.

Studies abroad - is my policy valid?
Yes, the card (excluding POLAND version) provides such insurance (studying, students’ training periods, internships, legal work abroad) throughout the whole year from the date of issue.

Insurance in Germany
German universities and officials often tend to make Polish students believe that their policy is not valid. At the same time they try to persuade them into buying their local insurance policy which is more expensive. Should you find yourself in the situation like that – contact Euro<26 or Signal Iduna to issue a personal certificate of your insurance.

Is my policy valid if there is no Euro<26 card editor in a particular country?
Yes, the insurance is valid all over the world irregardless of the fact whether there is a card editor in a particular country or not.

Rescue, search actions.
Insurance in Euro<26 does not cover the expenses related to search actions. It ensures the medical transport from the place where an accident happened and also home if such need arises. In the mountains: if an accident happens on a tourist route and there is a need for you to be transported to a doctor – the policy is valid. The reimbursement of the expenses shall not cover any search action if you are reported missing.
At sea: it may happen that sea rescue services abroad will make out a bill for search action. In such case you have to be a holder of a specialist sailing policy. Expenses related to medical treatment and transport from the place of accident to a doctor, or home if necessary, shall be covered with the insurance in your Euro<26 card.

Are foreigners who buy the Polish Euro<26 card insured as well?

Yes, but in such cases, medical treatment insurance is not valid in the country, in which this person stays permanently (i.e. is registered), and in Poland (this policy does not cover medical treatment expenses in our country whatsoever). In other countries of the whole world a foreigner with the Polish card has medical payment insurance and accident insurance.

Can I do any sport in any way with Euro<26 card?

  • High Risk Sports – ‘rafting or other sports done on mountain streams, scuba diving, parachute jumping, paragliding, gliding and driving any motor planes, bungee jumping, martial arts and any other defence sports, mountaineering, rock climbing, speleology, hunting, horse riding, bobsleigh, ski jumping, water skiing as well as sports in which you use snow and ice vehicles’.
